I’m a former yarn industry worker who is exploring arts and society through the lens of knitting, crochet, and craft. Find me on Bluesky and Instagram @smittyisknitting, and on Ravelry.
I have been knitting and crocheting for 12 and 13 years, respectively. I worked for a yarn business for 6 years, and during that time I became that company’s main contact for customer service and wholesale accounts, vended at industry events like the New York State Sheep & Wool Festival (Rhinebeck) and the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival. I’m also an enthusiastic sample knitter and tester who has tested patterns for Ambah O’Brien, Les Garçons, Olga Buraya-Kefelian, Beatrice Mase, Jaq Cieslak, Klara Cecilia, and Tressa Weidenaar.

Things to know:
- I write from the ancestral land of the Piscataway and Susquehannock people. I live on stolen land.
- Black lives matter, period. The United States was built by enslaved Black people, especially the American textile industry. I cannot ignore this as I write about yarn and fiber.
- Gender is non-binary and I have loved ones who are gay, trans, and non-binary. Queer people have existed around the world in different cultures for millennia.
- I am hostile to the use of generative AI because of its environmental impact and because it plagiarizes the original work of artists and writers. Everything you read or view on this blog is created by a human who cites non-AI sources.
